Sunday Breakfast

Sunday Breakfast
Our small kitchen
changed shape when
my father cracked eggs
into a pan of sizzling butter
scrambled them with a magician’s flair
served them to his assembled family
as if on this one day
he were an artist who couldn’t wait
to please us with his creation,
not the man who each night sank
into his seat at the formica table
sighed,
picked up his fork.
