WHAT WE WANT:
We are interested in your best autobiographical writing; particularly, writing that illuminates through stories of life. We consider prose, poetry, photo essays, and interviews with people whose life stories speak to us. We are open to a variety of approaches and moods. Let us get to know your story and your characters through action, dialogue, voice. Don't over-explain. Don't hit us over the head with your insights; let us see it in the story. Our primary prose emphasis is on nonfiction. We are open to a variety of types of poetry. We are also open to photography or art-work related to your writing. Check "Thoughts from the Editor" for more on our take on writing.
We are also interested in seeing reviews of books in the category of memoir/autobiography.
Recently, we have begun to consider short stories.
We are interested in seeing writing from a wide span of ages. Because young people may wonder if they're ready for autobiography, we have a few additional suggestions for the younger members of our readership. We are interested in pieces on study abroad (or other time abroad), internship, volunteer or work experiences. Help us see you there, and bring us into its significance to you. (See above about over-explaining and beating us over the head with your insights.)
WHAT WE DO NOT WANT TO SEE:
We are not terribly interested in interview of celebrities as celebrities, but could consider interviews about any person's human experiences. We don't shy away from stories involving conflict and distress, but do not want to see a "woe is me" approach, and are not favorable toward sensationalism.
INTERVIEW GUIDELINES:
We are open to narrative, transcript, or audio or video files and/or some combination of those. Inform interviewees of your submissions plans, and obtain written permission from them. Please document that for us when you send your submission.
LENGTH FOR PROSE: Up to 3,000 words, although we may at times consider higher counts.
LENGTH FOR POETRY: No hard and fast limit, although epic poems are better placed elsewhere.
LENGTH FOR PHOTO ESSAYS: Try us with what you have, keeping in mind that very large photo collections also slow the process of downloading.
PAYMENT: As a new venture, we are, unfortunately, unable to pay for writing or other material.
RIGHTS: You retain rights and ownership of your material but grant us electronic rights to publish. We may allow access to your work through electronic archives, but will remove it on your request.
HOW TO SUBMIT: For prose submissions, one submission per email. For poetry, submit up to five poems. Include with your writing a short author bio of 200 words or less.
