Split Screen
Well above the roar of the wind,
riding thermal currents,
seagulls swoop, wings gleaming white
against a blue-gray February sky
over a fallow corn field's brown and gold
here, far from the coast, in Pennsylvania.
I am transported
home to a rocky beach just north of Boston,
inhaling the salt,
chilled by the spray
of tides long past.
I sit at the Stop sign
as traffic inches past
the Forks of the Brandywine Church,
waiting for an opening,
still restless as the sea.
Minus one
Sleet crinkles audibly,
drilling pattern,
etching on slopes of last night’s snow,
while patient birch,
unfurling buds against the wind,
bears witness,
arching faith that spring will come.
Biographical Note:
Kate Lydon is a storyteller, writer and editor who at times hires out as

She is currently working on another novel, as well as a book of
