I went to sleep in the summer Pastan
It was still sweaty summer
who knew the storm
would make a change
take summer away
no time in the pool
weeks at the shore
childrens’ loud play
fireflies in the grass
all that summarizes
the lightness of life
turn it around
AUTUMN
What force can chase a rose
Aristocrat of summer
It stands commanding
In the garden
Relentless nature
Schedules appearances
Autumn comes
The rose must flee
RIVER
Water drops edge out
Gravity pulled
Gathering together
No one sees these microscopic
Rivers start - grow - flow
Into creeks - runs - rivulets
Into holes - ponds - lakes
Nature decides
What drop will flow
By daughters, nuns
Those drops force themselves
Up over through
Expanding until we see
A broadness full
Tumbling over
Flooding the city
WAYS OF SEEING A MIRROR
mirrors
reflect what
we think is true
mirrors
are not life
but a vision
with no mirrors
the house
is blind
without you
the mirror
does not see
the mirror
is a translated
message
the mirror
gives back
a simulacrum
a broken mirror
angles many
scenes
a mirror
behind
reveals secrets
without light
the mirror
fades
