Apple Strudel Day! ~ Len Gottesman The
kitchen was the center of the house. The center of everything, and our
white enameled metal top table, was in the middle of the kitchen.
Today, the table was covered with a big white cloth. Mother and Aunt
Annie wore white aprons. The ball of dough was in a big white bowl and
ready to be stretched.
Driving Lessons ~ Sandy Lichtenstein Twin sisters remember learning to drive:
Seriously- I didn’t know you could lift your hands off the steering
wheel one at a time, so when I went to make a turn, I would keep both
my hands in the same position on the wheel and try to turn it– my whole
body would end up turning, not the car!
My Dining Room Table ~ Jackie Echteler The living room chairs, couch
and rocker are long gone; in fact their replacements are gone, too. The
kids broke the desk chair when all three of them climbed on it while
fighting over who could use the computer.
I now have verification of
something I've long suspected: Walter, my Captain Courageous, who would
battle flood, flame, and possibly grizzly bear to protect me, would
abandon me in a trice if peril should appear in the form of mouse.
On my father's death in February
1862, I remember that my grandfather Ladd walked the floor for hours,
thinking what could be done for our family and he finally found the
place for me in Tilton and places on adjoining farms in Canterbury for
my younger brothers.
