The long days of summer often seem to me
as if they'll last forever. The giant cicada killer wasps will always
be digging holes in the front flower bed, the weeds will always get the
best of me, the butterflies will always flit from bush to bush, air
dancing in the summer heat. It's as if I can always take walks after
dinner in waning daylight as I watch the brilliant colors of the
summer sky.
The change is gradual, days shortening by amounts so tiny that I
scarcely notice, until one day it's suddenly clear: another season is
just around the corner. Kids will go back to school, but I still
haven't finished reupholstering that love seat. I haven't painted the
dining room, cleared out the basement, or made much of a dent in that
substantial reading list I somehow imagined I'd breeze through.
Nope, I didn't get everything done.
But our writers have been busy, and we do have ready for you the debut
issue of Creek Road Gang. Some of our writers have published books, and
some are publishing for the first time in this issue. Some are poets,
some write prose, and some write both. I am tremendously grateful to
the wonderful writers who bring this issue to life. Their stories and
poetry we present this month will take you to other states and other
countries, and across a variety of decades, situations, dreams and
characters.
Come with us! There's no subscription fee, no initiation rite, no
secret handshake, no funny hat. All you have to do to enjoy the Creek
Road Gang adventure is to point your mouse and click.
But you could get more involved if you like. Help our gang grow by
becoming part of Creek Road Gang. Share some of your reaction to CRG
in an email, put "Letter" in the subject heading and send it to: editor@creekroadgang.com We will print some of our reader emails in future issues.
Or send us a picture of your local creek, and tell us its name.
(Failing that, a picture of the dry creek bed will do.) We will choose
some of those pictures to put in future issues. (Send to: editor@creekroadgang.com, and put "Creek Picture" in the subject heading.)
Check our Submission Guidelines,
and consider what special stories you might like to share. Consider
who you might interview. Read a great memoir or autobiography lately?
Write a review. If you're feeling really ambitious, October 15 is
National Poetry Day AND National Grouch Day. Anyone in the mood to
create some grouchy autobiographical poetry? (Send to poetrysubmission@creekroadgang.com, and put "Grouchy Poetry" in the subject heading.)
Creek Road Gang celebrates different voices, points of view,
perspectives. Because everyone doesn't like the same thing, and in the
interests of making sure that the world of online autobiographical
writing doesn't get dull, I encourage you to get involved with our
gang.
And come back for our October issue, so we can keep exploring together.
